Angels in the Outfield (1951) is a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining picture about Guffy McGovern (Paul Douglas), the manager of the struggling Pittsburgh Pirates. When an orphan sees angels helping McGovern and the Pirates win games, reporter Janet Leigh begins writing stories about the angels and takes an interest in the irascible Douglas. The angels are tastefully done such that we see the effects of their actions and hear an angel speak, but we do not see any angels. Leigh and Douglas deliver memorable performances, and the story is sweet and not overly religious. This is a heartwarming film which is appropriate for viewers of all ages. Angels in the Outfield is a good family movie with a nice balance between sports and romance. Watch for Bing Crosby in a cameo role. Crosby was an owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates at the time the film was made.Read full review
I LOVE THIS AS MUCH AS I DID ANGELS IN THE ENDZONE WHICH IS ANOTHER GREAT MOVIE THAT THE FAMILY COULD REALLY ENJOY. I PURCHASED THIS COPY IN VHS AFTER MY SISTER CAME OVER AND WE WATCHED IT ON MY DVD COPY BUT SHE DOES NOT KNOW HOW TO HANDLE DVD PLAYERS AND BARELY KNOWS HOW TO OPERATE A VCP. I WROTE OUT INSTRUCTIONS AND HOW TO LOAD THE VCP AND PUSH THE PLAY BUTTON TO START AND END BUTTON AND EJECT WHEN THE MOVIE WAS OVER. I HAVE WATCHED MY COPY OVER 100 TIMES AND MY SISTER HAS WATCHED THIS MOVIE SO FAR ABOUT 30 TIMES AND REALLY LOVES IT. SHE TOLD ME IT IS A GREAT PICK-ME-UP WHEN SHE IS FEELING A BIT BLUE AND AFTER WATCHING IT SHE CAN'T REMEMBER WHY SHE WAS BLUE. AS THEY SAY, LAUGHTER IS GOOD MEDICINE AND SHE HAS PROVED IT. I GAVE IT 5 STARS BECAUSE THIS IS A MOVIE THAT IS LOVED BY CHILDREN AS WELL AS ADULTS.Read full review
