'The Dark Angel' is a rendition of the gothic novel 'Uncle Silas' by the Anglo-Irish master of suspense and the supernatural Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. An excellent black and white movie under the latter title was made of the story during the forties. 'Angel' is part of the admirable 'Masterpiece Theatre' series and is surely overdue for release on DVD. Anyone who has enjoyed reading the story may expect a treat when they visit this production. As an opening appetizer Dianna Rigg is present to set the scene. The story is not one of Le Fanu's supernatural tales though it is highly dramatic and spine chilling. Jane Laportaire is brilliant as the wicked governess Madame Rougier whilst Peter O'Toole is electrifying as the evil Silas. The story is an ideal vehicle for these two great actors at the height of their powers. A rare treat!Read full review
