Of all the movies depicting the Columbus voyages, this one seems to have an edge. This being the Christopher Columbus Holiday, I thought I would share some thoughts on the subject. In grade school, we followed the long standing ritual of "Columbus sailed the ocean blue to prove the world was round". So much has changed since then, and we have progressed to the point of believing less and less in the importance of the Columbus voyages and more in the belief that there were other discoveries (albeit not documented), and Columbus wasn't the fist. In 1992, as a compliment to the 500 anniversary, they assembled some of the best talent around to do a good depiction of the voyage. Yet, to this day, nothing accurately gives the account. Maybe a good documentary by Michael Moore could clarify the events of that era. Was Columbus actually facing beheading by his men if land weren't found in the nick of time? Did they see St. Elmo's fire, or was that included as a tribute to the popular T.V. series of the time? Not many people will read this review because I feel most people favor newer movies over those of a decade ago. Thus, hardly a review on this magnificent movie which should be a "must see"on everyone's list. For those who admire true acting, I can't say enough of the smug acting by the late Marlon Brando, or the crisp acting by George Corraface...and the many others who made for a great rendition (albeit lacking in facts). All told, well done!Read full review
This is a good account of Columbus's preparation and voyage to the America's. The main cast, outside of Columbus, may be a little too hollywood, but that is a minor distraction. The boats and the voyage itself are excellent as are the accounts in the America's. Well worth the price. Unfortunately, the movie is not available in an American format DVD, so had to settle for VHS. Would love to see the movie in better resolution.
This movie was underrated by the critics for the casting and storyline. However, there were many entertaining scenes after Columbus lands in the Caribbean Islands. For those who did not know the history of Columbus' landing, this movie was a real eye-opener.
Real good entertainment. Bought it because I started to watch it on TV and had to leave the house and did not have time to set up the VCR so I went to ebay to find a copy.
