Having been asked to write the first review for this album,I decided the way to approach it was to list the stellar list of contributors or collaborators first. The likes of Andrew Gold,Jim Gordon,Eric Clapton,Russ Kunkel,Lee Ritenour,Chaka Khan,Bill Payne,David Hungate,Greg Phillinganes,Michael McDonald,Michael Sembello,Ray Parker Jr.,Paulinho de Costa,David Foster,Art Garfunkel,John Tropea,Burt Bacharach, Jeff Porcaro,Dave Grusin and Phil Collins to name some, give you an idea of what's on offer. If you're familiar with some or all of these performers,then you'll understand where I'm coming from. Stephen Bishop is a talented but probably underrated singer songwriter who is a perceptive and clever lyricist as showcased in this comprehensive compilation. He has been described as a hopeless romantic which is very evident in this set. Many of the song titles say it all. The well known singles are standouts,but lesser known songs like Little Italy and Walking on Air hold their own. However,the newly recorded acoustic version of Separate Lives is a letdown for me,anyway. Acoustic versions in general can be hit or miss,and this one I find a little too slow and mellow,even though Stephen Bishop is known for and indeed usually excels with his soft rock. Maybe it's because it suffers in comparison to the hit version by Phil Collins and Marilyn Martin. The other previously unreleased song Somewhere Inbetween is much better. He truly loves his movie soundtracks. The gentle, melodic ballads and love songs can be quite delicate at times,yet his more uptempo material works well too. His lightweight voice has been criticised,but for the most part it fits the mood and material equally well. All in all,if you have heard Stephen Bishop before and liked what you heard(without having any of his albums)then this is for you. A great starting point or if you only have one or two of his albums.Read full review
