The 1982 'greatest hits' collection, "Stevie Wonder's Original Musiquarium I", is an excellent introduction to the music of Stevie Wonder for those who are less familiar with his catalog. It focuses on some of his most notable works from 1972-1982. With this remastered CD edition, released in 2000, brings a more superior sound quality to classic tracks that have been long overdue for a sonic polishing. Highlights: The superb digital remastering job which gives these recordings a fresh sounding makeover as well as the inclusion of new material, done at the time of it's original 1982 release, make Musiquarium more than just your average run-of-the-mill greatest hits album. As it turns out, 'Ribbon in the Sky', 'That Girl', and 'Do I Do' (all from 81-82), became just as essential listening for Stevie Wonder fans as 70's staples like 'Superstition', 'Sir Duke', 'Higher Ground', and 'Isn't She Lovely'. 'Do I Do' is particularly noted for featuring Dizzy Gillespie on trumpet with Wonder trading solos with him on harmonica. The song also features Stevie as an early hip-hop pioneer when he busts into a rap verse toward the end of the 11-minute closing track. It's also interesting to note the subtle-but-nice touch of Wonder's remixing of 'You are the Sunshine of My Life' with the addition of horns. Lowlights: 'Front Line'. This average song about a Vietnam war veteran glaringly pales in comparison to the quality of the rest of the album. It is one of the four aforementioned 'new' tracks that sounds incredibly 'dated' next to older songs which are still innovative by today's standards. Simply put...weak lyrics + passable music = not a worthy track for this compilation. If you like what you hear in this collection, definitely check out the actual albums in which these songs originally appear. They represent a period considered by many to be Wonder's creative 'peak'. However, because 15 out of the 16 tracks on Musiquarium I are undeniably classic masterpieces, it leads me to believe that another creative high point in the music of Stevie Wonder is yet to come. I'm lookin' forward to Musiquarium II... Spenc16Read full review
