1987 Alt-Country Goldmine
On this record Dwight Yoakam teamed up Pete Anderson who produced & played on several of his albums including Hillbilly deLux. With a timeless authenticity even with its alternative melding of genres, this is real Country music. Nearly all of the tracks have an upbeat rhythm while Yoakam sings about being a "lovesick fool." Catchy musical accompaniment with the bassline drives most of the songs as flourishes from the fiddle & twangy guitar leads add a musical punch. There's Rockabilly and Neo-traditional blends throughout. A few numbers start slow or mid-tempo with a light acoustic guitar, then the band joins in with a relaxed rhythm. A pedal-steel guitar and lots of resplendent guitar riffs add to the high-spirited feel of these tunes with a bassline + drumbeat that keep each song moving. Some interesting arrangements feature a fiddle solo followed by an outro guitar lead. The classic Root/5th bassline twins with the straightforward drumbeats. There's a bit of a throwback from Country-Western's golden era, some beachy lap-steel guitar, a lively bouncy cowboy feel and smooth vocal harmonies that Yoakam sings with more of the high-lonesome mood but keeps the energy alive. Animated playing like the taut-plucked guitar grooves dot much of the danceable tracks. Musically this album offers a few cool changes in tone dipping back & forth with major/minor riffs & progressions in a mix of electrified Country and old-school Bluegrass with ripping guitars and fiddle riffs vamping off each other combining for a catchy listen. The musical textures on this record lean heavy on the Golden California style rather than Nashville Pop Country. This album was originally recorded on analog equipment. The transfer to digital for this item CD preserves closely the original sound. Most sellers offer very good used copies of this item for bargain prices. It's not very long timewise. At 10 songs about 34 minutes worth, enough to get you through a lunch break or drive down the way. Overall an excellent item for a good value, good quality & highly recommended to Country music fans or those looking to start their Country music journey and don't quite know where to begin. You really can't go wrong here. Misery is a theme throughout this album cleverly couched behind resonant musical underpinnings that can coax the listener into thinking everything is jovial when some of the themes here are pretty dark.
