FLY BY NIGHT from Canadian rock legends RUSH features 8 tracks in all and includes some of the their earliest hits including the opener "Anthem" plus "Beneath, Between & Behind", "By-Tor & The Snow Dog" and the title track "Fly By Night". This is a stellar early release from the band, original year of release being 1975, that is often overlooked by casual fans of the band. But for diehard fans like myself who realize the band's career didn't begin with 2112, FLY BY NIGHT is a real early treasure and features the classic vocals work of Geddy Lee at his early years best! The sound quality is much better on this remastered version and you get the lyrics to each track in the liner notes booklet, though printed quite small. If you love RUSH, then FLY BY NIGHT is a definite must have addition to your collection. For the casual fan, the various best of collections out there will probably suffice. I give FLY BY NIGHT a much deserved 5 out of 5 stars. ROCK ON, longliveneilRead full review
Replacing the drummer (John Rutsey) who started with the band on their self titled debut (in 1974) with percussionist Neal Peart in 1975, the band picked up exactly where they left off from the previous years effort. Fly by Night is an outstanding cd, from beginning to end. It is very well written and produced. There are 8 songs on this studio effort and all of them are very, very strong both lyrically and musically but one (in my humble opinion) really outshines the others. The last song, aptly named "In The End" starts out soft with Geddy singing softly and slowly setting up a bass line, with Alex in the back putting down a steady acoustic line then almost 2 minutes into it, they then change the pace as Alex switches to the electric guitar on lead while at the same time the drum beats from Neal begins. Geddy's voice becomes more pronounced and as the pace continues on from this point, Geddy implores you to listen as he belts out the line near the end "Well I can shine like you shine, it don't make me brighter. But if I think like you think, it don't make my loader much lighter." With strong, philosophical lyrics like this you'll notice that the true beginning of Rush's power begins and ends with statements made by very simple yet profound visions of life and the world around us. Rush has their true start on this 2nd album as a thinking man's progressive rock band with the release of Fly by Night. It is a cd that I think everyone who loves rock music should own!Read full review
Second album from Rush shows just how good this band is. Geddy's bass guitar is prominent and shows why he is one of the very best bassist of all time. Alex also show's why he is also one of the best lead guitarist's in all of rock n roll. Neil Peart's first album with Rush and takes over most of the lyrical work from here on through the bands catalog. Bytor and the snow dog showcases where Rush is going after this album and In The End is just an awesome tune. The title song Fly By night is actually one of the few cut's I dislike on this album. As a Rush fan this album is probably my 5th favorite effort from them. It is a must have for any Rush fan especially those of us who are not to impressed with their work after Permanent Way's which I believe was the last of the Rush I liked and knew. I just wish we could put the band in a time capsule and have them make music like they used to during this period. The only comparison to Rush and U2 is they both show how money destroys the music.Read full review
Fly By Night, the second Album from Rush, and the first including drummer and lyricist Neil Peart, is a milestone for the band and for rock music in general. While their first album was acceptable enough, and included the classic Working Man, this follow up set a new standard with songs like Anthem, Fly by Night, and, especially, the epic By-Tor and the Snow Dog. The latter is the first of a series of Rush epics, and holds up as one of the best to this day. Overall, this album is a must have for any Rush fan, for any prog-rock fan, and for any hard rock fan.
