If the existence of the "Star Trek Curse" were put on trial to see if it's true or not, then "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" would be Exhibit A as proof. (For those of you who aren't die hard Star Trek fans like me, the "Star Trek Curse" is the belief that even numbered Star Trek movies like "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" do very well while odd numbered movies like "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier" do poorly.) While it pains me to say this since I enjoy Star Trek so much, let me sum up my review in one word: it's HORRIBLE! (And yes, the capital letters are on purpose!) Where should I even begin describing all the things wrong with this film? Maybe I should start with the plot, which is so odd and tired, it's downright pathetic. The basic plot (if you can even call it that) is that a madman takes over the "Enterprise" and Captain Kirk and friends have wrestle it back from him. If this sounds familiar, than that's because the plot is just a rehash of the very successful "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan." The acting? It's simply awful maybe due to William Shatner's directing. (Please, please, Captain Kirk, the captain's chair is your place, not the director's chair!) What about the dialogue? It's generally poor except for a few funny exchanges between Dr. McCoy and Spock. The rest of the movie declines from there. The movie moves from the strange (the quest for this god like character -- whenever Star Trek touches on religion, it's strange) to the completely, utterly bizarre (Scotty and Uhura, romantically involved?!?). Also, a science fiction movie is defined by its special effects. The special effects are cheap looking and old. (Unlike for all the other films, Industrial Light and Magic didn't do the VFX, and a small company handled them instead, and it really shows. Not only that, other effect shots were lifted directly from previous Star Trek movies!) This film is so bad that it's little wonder that "The Final Frontier" is not usually included in the official Star Trek Canon. (In other words, none of the information on people, places, or things is included in those Star Trek fact books.) In addition, it won "Worst Picture" of 1989 at the Golden Raspberry Awards by a substantial majority. Star Trek fans: only see this film if you want to see how low it's possible for Star Trek to go. The *only* redeeming quality of it is the occasional funny conversations between Kirk, Spock, and McCoy. Non Star Trek fans: I beg of you not to see this movie less you get a bad impression of the series! "The Final Frontier" is an extremely poor representation of Star Trek and will leave you with a bad taste for all things Trek.Read full review
