Steel Magnolias is a must see movie! Many wonderful actresses (including Julia Roberts in her breakout role) make this one of my all time favorites. It's the story of a young woman with type 1 diabetes who risks her life to have a baby (against her doctor's advice). She does have her child successfully, but ultimately, she dies when her kidneys fail and she goes into a deep coma. Sally Field as the mother is another great role for her. Dolly Parton, Shirley Maclaine, Olympia Dukakis, Darryl Hannah also give wonderful performances as quirky Southern women who are close friends of the family. You'll laugh, you'll cry, and you'll laugh some more! A must see film!!

This is a movie I first watched when it was newly released. Over the years, I have caught it on various cable stations and have always found that after watching it, I was uplifted and inspired. When watching it for the first time, I never dreamed that I would, in many ways have to walk in Malynn's (Sally Field's character) shoes. In 1997, my husband of 22 years suffered an inter-cerebral hemorrhage that has left him permantly disabled and in a 24-hour care facility. Seeing the courage that Malynn has in dealing with her daughter's illness; her tenacious nature in refusing to give in, when others would have; the grace which carries her through the many twists and turns of caring for an entire family; the neverending sense of humor; and abiding love of family are all things that I have gone through within the past nine years. This movie has helped me time and time again helped me to adjust to all of the changes and challenges that I have been faced with and has given me a peace and calm after many tumultuous storms.Read full review
This is one of the all-time great plays turned into a fabulous movie with each part played to perfection. There is not a misstep in direction and the casting is just what the doctor ordered. In the original play there are only women but I loved the addition of the men who are only mentioned in the play. The interplay between mother (Sally Field) and daughter (Julia Roberts) is subtle and a wonder to behold. This is a movie you can see again and again and always find something new. I recommend it wholeheartedly.
This is a very touching story about the lives of a group of friends (all women)and the struggles in there lives from being all alone to an abusive husband to career pregnancy and even death... This movie is a big tear jerker all the way through - sally field, Dolly pardon, Julia Roberts, Darrell Hanna, and olimpia Dukakas are all amazing -- There is alos one more incredibly talented actress in this movie but here name slips my mind... anyhow the point is buy it, watch it, Cry like a little girl with a skinned knee -- Then repeat... You'll be glad you did!!!!
