A somber, atmospheric, almost brooding film set in the frenetic and garish Mongkok district in Hong Kong, AS TEARS GO BY is art house auteur and romantic Wong Kar-Wai's first feature film. It sets the tone of films to come, exemplary of the director's existential preoccupations and obsession with time, chance, and missed connection. At the heart of the story is Ah Wah (Andy Lau), a mobster with a protoge--Fly (Jackie Cheung)--who can't stay out of trouble. Continually landing in one hot spot after another, Fly depends on Wah to get him out of each mess, and though the local mob boss has told Wah to push Fly into another line of work, Wah can't seem to say no to his friend. When his sick cousin (Maggie Cheung) comes to stay with him, he tries to keep his unsavory existence from entering her life, but to no avail. Fly's continual crises impinge on the love that begins to grow between the two, and though he begins to rethink his life, no good can come of this triangle. CS Reviews - As Tears Go By (1988)
This crime film from Hong Kong was recognized for its brutal violence, captivating story, and film direction from Wong Kar-Wai. For Kar-Wai's film debut, this is a telling of a small time gangster, Wah (Andy Lau), who placed himself in a tightrope between love and danger. One side is when he falls for his cousin, Ngor (Maggie Cheung) that visits Hong Kong to stay with him while operating her sister's restaurant, and the other side is where he risks his life to keep his brother, Fly (Jacky Cheung) out of the triad before his debt won't pay off his life. It's hard to describe how good the entire film was when I discovered it on DVD, so hopefully this review gives you the idea. Released in 1988, 'As Tears Go By' is fantastic for its gritty direction. Especially the way it was filmed in a bloody, dramatic atmosphere where gangsters and thugs take on the dangerous streets. It was also known to be compared to the 1973 Martin Scorsese movie, 'Mean Streets' for its similar elements for the story. Not only that it includes a subtle development, it even has a variety of characters that stood out the entire time. Andy Lau had his outstanding performance for his menacing sense of character that shows true feelings for his brother and cousin. Others like Jacky and Maggie Cheung were also well claimed for their likable characters that we feel sorry for. A quick mention that this movie includes a Cantonese song rendition of Berlin's 'Take My Breath Away'. For those that live in the U.S. (or in another English speaking country) and can recognize the song from 1986's 'Top Gun', it should at least bring you back memories in a different turn. :) To sum it up, most crime films are like life stories of a main character that falls into bloody days of murder and danger, and 'As Tears Go By' is what I considered one of them. It is a foreign film that falls into this category by defining brutal violence, tears of blood, love and sacrifice that gets the job done. This is a must see for anyone (inside and outside of the U.S.) that enjoys watching gangster movies, and fans of the great Andy Lau. Even though it's spoken in Cantonese, the DVD copy includes English subtitles, and provides four trailers for Wong Kar-Wai's pieces of work. Out of my top 10 favorite films, I consider it as a personal favorite of mine, and it deserves to be kept in a good home of a hardcore film collector.
