The self-titled album, recorded with journeyman bassist Rick Wills and Sutherland Brothers drummer Willie Wilson, later to be part of the touring Floyd lineup for its Wall dates, isn't a deathless collection of music in comparison to Gilmour's group heights, but is a reasonably pleasant listen nonetheless. Certainly it's much more approachable than Animals, released earlier that year, eschewing epics for relatively shorter, reflective numbers. Numbers of note include "Cry From the Street," with its fully rocked-out conclusion, the sweetly sad "So Far Away," one of his best vocal showcases, and the concluding "I Can't Breathe Anymore," capturing the recurrent Pink Floyd theme of isolation quite well. While one would be hard-pressed to hum a memorable melody outside of "There's No Way Out of Here," it's still a good enough experience for those who enjoy his work.Read full review
If you're into the Floyd thing, like I have always been, you will like this CD alot. Very soft and harmonious and feeling like the singer and listener are friends unlike some of the colder, distant Floyd tunes. Just remember, this isn't Pink Floyd, just a calmer direction for one of it's members. It came as tensions within the group were maxing out and just after Animals was released (the album, not the CD). According to the artist it was a way of blowing off steam due to his and Roger Waters' differences which culminated in Waters leaving after, appropriatly, "The Final Cut". But just the same, it showcases the smooth, euretheral stratocaster tones that has made David famous. His voice is as smooth as always, he expores rythyms and moods he couldn't with Pink. The song list has a nice flow to it. A must have for the Floyd fan and much much better than his second one, "About Face". I'm dying to get my hands on his new release "On an Island" which sounds like it will be great from what I've heard.Read full review
love everything Floyd. this is a good one as are all his albums. this one is a bit more rocking than his later years when all the songs are kinda slow. good rock album.

David Gilmour is finally getting some credit for being one of the best rock guitarists around. His debut solo album still doesn't get the attention it deserves. This is really good stuff! Don't buy it if you're looking for another Dark Side of the Moon, though. This album has a flavour all its own. It's a Gilmour solo album. Don't look for the incredible magic that came out of his tumultuous relationship with Roger Waters. It isn't there. What is there is some great guitar playing, just as you should expect.

YOU CAN HEAR THE FLOYD CHARACTERISTICS IN THE FIRST RELEASE FROM HIM BUT, DO NOT CONFUSE YOURSELF, THIS IS AN EXCELLENT RELEASE AND WILL CONTINUE TO GAIN POPULARITY OVER THE NEXT FEW YEARS.MOST PEOPLE EXPECTED A TYPICAL FLOYD - LIKE SOUND WHEN THIS WAS ISSUED SOME PEOPLE WERE A LITTLE DISSAPOINTED AT FIRST THEN REALIZED THIS ALBUM WAS AS GOOD AS ANYTHING FLOYD HAD RELEASED
