This album/soundtrack was very well done. I’ve purchased a couple of these CD’s, as I tend to wear them out after having played them so many times! The tracks are straight out of the movie (as to be expected), and are wonderfully relaxing to listen to. There are plenty of pieces with great piano work, as well as the usual moving pieces that bring you back to various scenes in the movie. This was done by Randy Edelman, but you could easily mistake it for something done by James Horner (meant as a compliment to Edelman - Horner’s soundtracks are commonly very well done, as is this one!). If you enjoyed the movie, you are sure to be pleased with this soundtrack. OF IMPORTANT NOTE though - if you enjoyed the movie, and/or love great soundtrack scores (such as this), don’t get caught off-guard by the FOLLOW-UP CD to this soundtrack (More Music from Gettysburg). I’m writing this HERE (as well as under the other CD) mainly because - after having bought THIS album, I rushed out and bought the 2nd one from this movie too. THAT was a big mistake. The 2nd CD is pretty much nothing but fiddle tunes, and is completely lacking in the wonderful music scores that THIS CD has. So - unless you are a civil war buff and/or want to hear a ton of things on the fiddle - stick to just THIS CD / soundtrack for Gettysburg, and skip the 2nd CD. They are worlds apart in sound.Read full review
For anyone who liked the movie or who likes the music from the time period you will not be disappointed. This is an excellent piece of work in total and very enjoyable. With each piece of music, if you have seen the movie, it will take you back to the scene in your head. My only complaint that could be made, especially given the scenes playing, they put the music on the CD in random order apparently - especially compared to the order it was played in on the soundtrack of the movie so you get the aftermath of Picket's charge before the thundering boom of the charge itself and things like that - with MP3 and order selection tough, a little effort eliminates even that problem.
The music by Randy Edelman for the Turner film "Gettysburg" is truly epic as befits an epic film. It touches one to the core. It is a worthy opus for the classical repertoire and should have been a replacement for the staid "1812 Overture" at Independence Day concerts as its content is more in tune with the spirit of that day than a Tchaikovsky piece about a French invasion of Russia ever could be.
If you were to hear the sounds of great conflict, this would be one of the more prolific movie renderings. Hearing the music, tensions, and pace helps one remember the movie highlights; both good and bad. Kudos to the supplier. Good quality product and delivery.
