The best known version of Journey To The Center Of The Earth. Arlene Dahl looks good. A young Pat Boone does an excellent acting job. James Mason is very easy to like. Special effects are good for the late 1950's. The Carlsbad Caverns location shooting adds a realistic background for the story. The singing of the Edinburg college students is remeniscent of the students in Chariots Of Fire. The credits are shown in wide screen, the remainder of the movie is shown in pan and scan full screen. The same version is shown on the AMC channel. The DVD version may be a full screen version, but I have not seen it.
This is nothing but an old fashioned couple of hours of fun. The way they used to make movies in the halcyon days. James Mason stars as the Professor, Arlene Dahl as his competitor's untrusting widow, Pat Boone as his young student and a host of unusual character actors to round out the cast. The story begins in Edinborough where Mason's character becomes obsessed with a lump of lava given him as a present by his students. The journey leads to Iceland and a decent into a now defunct crater. So begins the journey which will ultimately take them to the center of the earth where they will encounter giant lizards, forests of mushrooms, a villain who follows tham all the way to the center, the discovery of the lost city of Atlantis and a variety of other unique and wonderful sights. Definately a must see for film fans and for my money an outstanding bill of fare for children of all ages. The special effects were by the great master, Harry Hausen. Don't miss this one!!!Read full review
This movie is still the best telling of Jules Vernes masterpiece. The acting is excellent and the special effect very good for their time and place. This movie is well worth the purchase.

I had never seen this, so decided I'd like to check it out. At first I thought it looked 'corny' like so many old movies do, but as it progressed I really became taken in by it and enjoyed it. What a fun movie- had the feel of "Willy Wonky" at times. Glad I watched it and think I will add it to my collection!
Great vintage movie
