There have been many movies recreating the life and times of Jesus our Messiah, a few good and some not so good, either in directing, acting, script, etc. Few stick to the bible as a source, most depart from it here or there, and the ones which are faithful to scriptures usually are poorly done in my opinion. The 2 movies which have had the most impact on my life? Coming in second place would be "Jesus of Nazareth", the mini series. Extremely well done and powerful, but being 6 hours long it isnt something one can just sit through on most occasions. Number one without doubt would be Jesus Christ Superstar, the rock opera/movie, 1973, starring young rockers, Ted Neeley as Jesus, Carl Anderson as Judas, and Yvonne Elliman as Mary Magdelene. Though the church in that day spoke against it, this of course was mainly due to the prejudice against rock music of the day. Few who spoke against it had actually seen it to judge the content in comparison with scriptures. This movie and Ted Neeley's performance gripped me to the core. It caused me to see Jesus Christ in a light i had never considered. The church redily teaches that Jesus was both fully man and fully God, and yet very few times in teachings or sermons are we caused to consider the emotional plights of Jesus the human... Jesus the man. Such demands made on His life in His ministry, He exhaustively gave Himself in both His life and death. By far the most gripping scene in my opinion is the scene in the garden of Gethsemene, when Jesus asked the Father that IF there be any other way, please let things be done another way. Sad, scared, exhausted... the man did not want to drink from that cup... and yet we see Him overcoming His own flesh out of obedience to His Father, and love for His creation... the determining factors. Most people including nonchristians, people of other religions and even atheists, have testified that this was one of the most powerful cinematic scenes they have ever witnessed and most even testify they are moved to tears. I have heard atheists say this scenes caused them to consider becoming believing christians. Filmed on location in Israel, performed by what many would call hippies, this will be a movie you will never forget, and my bet is you will never see Jesus the same. If youve never paused to appreciate Him, this movie will give you pause to consider.Read full review
A good throwback. Blue-eyed Jesus? Or maybe green? Lots of good trivia about filming this in Israel, like how J.C. almost got literally nailed to the cross in first take. Travolta almost played J.C.
