Thomas Dolby is someone you either like or don't, I guess. One of the most ubiquitous figures of the early MTV era with his hit, "She Blinded Me with Science" and an synth-pop artist who's worked with dozens of other folks (he contributed the signature keyboard sound to Foreigner's "Urgent", for the Thompson Twins, on Def Leppard's "Pyromania" album, among others) he's also someone who basically dropped his solo career after this album until reviving it on a low key basis a couple of years ago. This album came ten years after his first and biggest, and is in many ways a step back toward that style, dropping the direct and full-out funk of the previous album, "Aliens Ate My Buick" (though the funk influence is still clear) and returning to the wispy synth-pop sounds in the background, and even to themes from his first album in "Eastern Bloc" which references and is essentially a sequel to "Europa and the Pirate Twins". By and large this album was a commercial disappointment, but it still has some very nice work, including, "I Love You Goodbye", "Silk Pyjamas", "I Live in a Suitcase", and the single-oriented, "Close But No Cigar". If you like Dolby much at all odds are you'll find something to like about this album. I have a weakness for "Aliens" but this is still an album I appreciate getting back into my collection.Read full review
Thank You TMDR for your wonderful style and song writing. This project has proved to be one of his most introspective and warmest recordings. For those fans who did not take a liking to this album are making a big mistake. This is a more mature sounding Dolby leaving most of the '80s cold-synth pop material behind (Come on guys, he can't record material like She Blinded Me With Science forever)... This time the man takes you on a vacation to New Orleans-cajun country style with I Love You Good Bye to a trip to the London Underground with Silk Pyjamas. The sweet simplicity of a piped-keynote of Cruel injects just the right amount of tranquility or transition before the Cajun cookin' partying sound of Silk Pajamas. The track of the life changing love and decisions called I Live In A Suitcase is a more retro synthesized sound rekindling his earlier Age Of Wireless period. The album's clincher, however, is "Beauty Of A Dream," which is probably one of the best songs Dolby has ever written. Emotional without being sappy, its lyric also lays an emotional Dolby bare. Jerry Garcia's well placed solo strikes perfect ground as well. I highly reccomend this album for fans and people who think that Thomas Dolby is just another 1 hit wonder- I beg to differ.Read full review
I really love this music from Thomas Dolby. Great tunes and lyrics that run the spectrum, from quirky to compelling to foot stompin' to hauntingly beautiful as only this master of the synthesizer can do.

A mature Thomas Dolby proves a heartfelt human side about perceptions of winning or losing and in a compassionate way. Beautiful and unpretentious melodies and style. This CD along with the golden age of wireless will give you the deadliest best of Dolby.

I like Thomas Dolby! His music and the fact that he's played with Foreigner and \George Clinton just to name a few tell me he's a diversified musician and certainly one of the best at what he does. His studio work is extrodenary,he's in a class by himself!I saw him play live once (in Poughkeepsie,NY) and enjoyed the show very much! I hope he cuts another record soon!
it was exactly as promised and delivered quick.
