This World War One flight simulator is based loosely on the table top miniatures game of the same name. The controls are fairly intuitive and the game has nice graphics and game mechanics. I would classify this game more as an arcade style flight simulator as opposed to the more hard-core flight sims with more realistic flight modeling - but still lots of fun to play. The game options allow you to select from several control layouts so you can pick the control scheme that you are most comfortable with. The game also has both quick play instant action and a campaign mode. One thing I do want to note is that this game is not on Microsoft's Xbox to Xbox 360 compatibility list. You must have an original Xbox to play this game as it will not work on the newer Xbox 360 (I tried). Bottom line, if you still have your old Xbox and feel like dogfighting in WWI fighters, this is a really fun game.Read full review
Wings of War is a WWI flight sim for the Xbox. I got interested in it when I saw Fly Boys in the theater and wanted to try it out. You can fly a number of Allied and German aircraft from the era. The graphics are pretty good, not overly detailed but quite good, and the area's you fly in are huge. I went a long way away from a mission target once and never really hit the mission boundary. There are a lot of missions to play through in Campaign mode and they cover not only air targets, planes, bombers, zepplins, etc, but ground targets too. You may have to destroy a convoy on the ground, bomb a bridge to stop supplies from getting to the enemy or bomb artillery guns and stop them from destroying Allied troops and transports. You can also open side quests in the missions. A couple I've had were to fight a German flying ace and another had me bring down but not destroy a plane with an experimental machine gun on it. A few things in the game you wouldn't see in this era like shields and radar but are necessary to be able to complete missions and find your targets in missions. In Campaign mode, you also get Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch. In Deathmatch all the AI planes attack you and in Team Deathmatch you play Allied against the Germans. There's also an Instant Action mode that will drop you right into a fight if you don't want to go through the whole Campaign. The sound is ok but not fantastic. Could have used some work there. The voices sometimes faded out and became hard for me to hear when they gave instructions on missions. This is only a 1 player game so no going up against your buddy on his Xbox and there's no Online capability either so you can't fly with friends on Xbox Live. I'm not upset about this but I know a lot of people enjoy going up against friends and family on Xbox Live so it can be a problem. I still think it's a fun game and it keeps me coming back for more. It's a budget priced game too, it only cost me $15, and really does provide quite a lot of fun for the cost. In this time of stealth planes and supersonic fighters this game is a fun return to a time when the only thing between you and the enemy was a machine gun and a leather jacket. I give it a 7.5 out of 10.Read full review
Solid game with very long missions. It's easy to assume your going to just jump into the saddle and start downing plane after plane to become the ace of aces with many flying games, but with this game you have to actually earn it. Wings of War is, while older by todays standards, still a sharp looking game with the actual feel of being on the cusp of flying technology. You have to actually get the feel for each of the different planes and fly them as opposed to just pointing the nose at the enemy and letting rip with the machine guns. Each mission is very long with multiple sections. This makes for lots of game time but also gets annoying if your having difficulty with a certian mission or air craft. Don't expect to much out of yourself at first and deffinately fly to tutorial. All and all a fun game but one that takes patience and may not be the best for players just looknig to blow things up.Read full review
I received this game with the idea that it would be a first person fighter game. Though I like a good story line, I got bored very quickly from the primitive nature of the game play and very low resolution of the graphic. I wouldn't recommend this game to an old timer like me who expects better graphics and a first person fighter game.
