Being a Militaria dealer based in Australia my knowledge of US Military edged weapons was limited, however there is a growing demand in Australia for US edged weapons especially from the WW2 era M.H.Cole had written approx 4 books previously on US military edged weapons and his latest book with Michael W Silvey The Best of US Military Knives Bayonets and Machetes is the 4 previous books condensed into one. Some content has been dropped to enable the book to be a suitable size with quality remaining. We are now in a generation where technology has allowed reference books on all subjects to include quality color images throughout the book and it certainly seems that this is the standard that will progress into future books, However in Coles latest book he has maintained that individual style of using quality line drawings and sketchings that are of the highest quality to illustrate edged weapons, it certainly works. If like me, you require a one stop reference book on US Military edged weapons the The Best of US Military Knives Bayonets and Machetes is the only book to buy.Read full review
The full title begin "The Best of..." since it is a condensation of Cole's four earlier books into one by Michael Silvey, one of the leading authorities in the field. Although somewhat dated, and containing a few assertions which further research has shown to be incorrect - e.g., the reference to Ka-Bar UDT knives on p. 120 which Silvey corrects - Cole's work continues to be the fundamental source for information on U.S. military knives - particularly those from WWII. Every collector should own a copy of this book, and if they can only afford one book, this should be it.
An excellent compilation of M.H.Cole's three books on U.S. military knives. A must-have for the serious military knife collector. Instead of looking through his three highly regarded reference books, you can now have them all together in this one fine hardcover book.
This book is a clear, concise and illustrated reference source for one of the areas that I am interested in. I have found it useful as a desk reference and highly reliable.
A muust have price guide. It has everything you need for WWII fighting knives, bayonets, and machetes. Goes great with The best of U.S.Military Knives, bayonets, and Machetes, by by M.H.Cole
