Looking back now at Henry King's western made in 1950; it could easily be seen as a model for the darker westerns of the 50's by Anthony Mann, Budd Boetticher, and even John Ford's the Searchers. These director's and their movie's changed the way we saw westerns. The white hatted good guy always fighting and beating the black hatted bad guy. In the Gunfighter, Gregory Peck, pulls off what looked like a challenging role for him. I have seen it written that Peck made acting look easy. Just watch him in this movie, and the pain of the character looks as if Peck is in the same pain. I highly recommend this movie to any western fan, or anyone interested in a darn good script well acted by all, especially Millard Mitchell.
Peck plays a dark character in this film. He wants a better life but he knows that he is doomed by his past. First saloon scene is classic. Karl Maudlin is a surprise. He plays the bar tender. Lots of action, great actors and acting. The only draw back is that the end of the movie is predictable. Other then this is great movie.

Movie made about the same time as "Twelve O'Clock High", one of Gregory Peck's critical successes. This was also a critical success. Besides, can any movie with Gregory Peck be anything but good?
this is a good old time western if you like old westerns this one is great its in vhs form only but thats ok goes along with the old time theme
