Being a huge fan of older movies this movie is largely outdated and ran rather thin early. It includes some of the best dressed and cleanest Quaker families you will ever see. The plot sort of builds to a point when the Civil War visits the Quaker family in Indiana. In the space of two incidents between the son and father with the southern rebels... suddenly its over and things return to normal as if nothing ever happened. Finally the 6 Academy Award nominations had to be because the the antiwar sentiment that probably existed in tne 1950's seeing the the 2nd World War was recently over the Korea was not being addressed. Definitely not a film that has stood well during the test of time. Very little action as well.
THIS IS ONE OF SEVERAL OLD FILMS I HAVE SEEN OVER THE YEARS THAT I HAVE NEVER GOTTEN TIRED OF.I HAVE NO TIME FOR THE HOLLYWOOD MINDSET OF TODAY OR THE TRASH THAT SPEWS OUT OF THE ENTERTAINMENT SCENE.THIS MOVIE IS CLEAN, WHOLESOME AND TOUCHES THE HEART AS THEY ALL SHOULD.I RECOMMEND THIS TO ALL THOSE WHO DESIRE TO WALK AWAY AFTER THE FILMS END AND FEEL CONTENT AND PROPERLY ENTERTAINED.
Have loved this movie for many decades. Such a wonderful family film.

This is a movie that you will watch more than once. I enjoyed the inocense of the era gone by. Gary Cooper showed he does have a sense of humor and what a romantic man also. Everyone in the cast of this movie just compliment each other. The goose even has a showcase part in this movie that is funny.
