This is a massive work that took seven years to put together and publish; the effort shows. For a person living in the temperate zone it is invaluable as a quide and database to establish a living gaia patch, as it were, to provide for ones needs. At first, I was overwhelmed by the detail information presented, but the reader can "weed out" the details, if one desires. I found the case studies most helpful in giving a practical idea on what can be done in what time frame. The authors provide lists of trees, shrubs and plants, where to obtain them and blank workheets to aid in the process. This type of "gardening" seems not only more "rational", but more "fun" than the standard backyard annual row type. Oh, David Jacke has a web site on forest gardening with updates for the book, most helpful! If you live in North America, get this, you will not be sorry!Read full review
