"Do the Right Thing" is no doubt one the best films of 1989 and on of my top 10 favorites released that year. Spike Lee directs a gem that focuses on racial tensions and stereotypes in a Brooklyn neighborhood on a hot summery day. The late Danny Aiello gives a riveting Oscar-nominated performance as the pizza owner. The story and the cast are terrific! Meanwhile the music gives this film some palpable tension and movies the audience as a whole. I feel Spike Lee should've won the Oscar for Original Screenplay even though he was nominated. Danny Aiello was Oscar-nominated for his role as Sal the pizza shop owner. In addition to the late Aiello, this ensemble also includes such late greats as Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Bill Nunn, Robin Harris, Paul Benjamin, Rick Aiello and Frank Vincent of "The Sopranos". DTRT is one of my all-time favorites no doubt. I first saw this film when I was 5 when my mother rented the tape but remember very little of it until I was a teenager when I started watching it on IFC and Bravo. If you're into hood films let alone stories of racial challenges facing today's America (i.e. "Boyz n the Hood", "Crash"), give "Do the Right Thing" a watch and I guarantee you, you will fall in love with this film. So I didn't see this till now, 22 years after its release. Here's the thing, a good film stands the test of time, and Mr. Lee's film certainly does. Sure the clothes and hair are all reto 80s, but the story is well told of life and loves of a small neighborhood. I especially thought the thing about the pizzeria, not having any black celebrity pics, was just the sort of seed of social injustice to start the riot that ends in death of a black man. And life would be a lot better if we all just did the right thing. If you haven't seen it or seen it in a while, watch it.
