George Peppard stars as Jonas, a hard-drinking young aircraft tycoon who starts going off the deep end when his tyrannical father (Leif Erikson) dies. After reclaiming the girl his father stole from him (Carroll Baker), Jonas starts producing movies--at first to help his old friend, a silent-film star struggling to make the transition to sound (Alan Ladd) but eventually to placate his out of control ego. After numerous failed marriages and ever-worsening alcoholism, Jonas finally makes an effort to face the demons of his past, but it may be too late.Director Edward Dmytryk (THE YOUNG LIONS, RAINTREE COUNTY) enlivens this sprawling film with his sense of character and period detail. Peppard is fine as the lead, and Alan Ladd unusually accessible as the aging cowboy star, Nevada Smith. The women in the cast, though, have little to do except manipulate the men for money and sex. Tinsel Town Nostalgia
When I opened the mail it was if I had gone back in time. The Carpet Baggers was loosely based on the life of Howard Hughes. The character, Jonas Cord, was a "wild child" who turned his dead father's chemical plant into a multi million dollar conglomerate of aircraft production & movie making in the late 1920's. It was an exciting look at how Hollywood made & broke movie stars & business men by the ruthless actions of one very disturbed but wealthy young man. The fast-paced life he led finally caught up to him but toward the end of his pursuits he was confronted by the only person who really loved him & tuned him away from his fast paced & cutthroat lifestyle to return to his family he realized he loved & who loved him & understood the deep dark secret he was hiding from everyone. George Peppard was a very under rated actor whom I miss seeing in new movies.Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
