This disc is simply jaw dropping. It was recorded March 4th 1958 at an air force base in California by the great Wally Heider. The sound is so good that you can forget it's a LIVE DANCE GIG..until you hear the crowd and the cross talk..Everybody sounds like they are having a blast and the solo performances are dead on...but it's that cross talk that is astonishing..Once, Duke Ellington was MORE then just maybe the greatest American composer. He ran a dance band and came to town and would talk to old friends and have laughs. He'd get so excited he'd yell that they just HAD to play "The Mooch"...He'd play Count Basie's stuff just for fun and because Basie was an old pal. You read about genius. You study their works. And it's easy to forget they were humans who loved and laughed and cried and could dig a tight horn section. This reminds you of that. It puts you right up front with the friends of the band and the band members as they happily talk and yell to each other and make up arrangements on the spot. It's not a 50 year old tape. You are THERE...Part two of the ten disc PRIVATE COLLECTION...tapes Duke recorded and kept for his own pleasure. It's easy to see why he kept this one. You are also grateful it finally saw the light of day.Read full review
