Reviews"A poignant and deeply understanding story of childhood and family relationships....[Smith's] book has light and air in it, comedy and pathos, and an underlying rhythm pulsing to the surge and flow of humanity itself. No matter what happens to the Nolans, they never lose their awareness of the sweetness and wonder of life." -- Orville Prescott, New York Times "Betty Smith was a born storyteller." -- USA Today "One of the books of the century." -- New York Public Library "A profoundly moving novel, and an honest and true one. It cuts right to the heart of life. . . . If you miss A Tree Grows in Brooklyn you will deny yourself a rich experience." -- New York Times "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn deserves to be thought of as one of the greatest American novels." -- The New Yorker "One of the most cherished of American novels....It is the Dickensian novel of New York that we didn't think we had." -- New York Times, A profoundly moving novel, and an honest and true one. It cuts right to the heart of life. . . . If you miss A Tree Grows in Brooklyn you will deny yourself a rich experience.

SynopsisAn autobiographical novel concerning a young daughter of German immigrants growing up in the slums of Williamsburg, Brooklyn, in the early 20th century, A PBS Great American Read Top 100 Pick A special 75th anniversary edition of the beloved American classic about a young girl's coming-of-age at the turn of the twentieth century. From the moment she entered the world, Francie Nolan needed to be made of stern stuff, for growing up in the Williamsburg slums of Brooklyn, New York demanded fortitude, precocity, and strength of spirit. Often scorned by neighbors for her family's erratic and eccentric behavior--such as her father Johnny's taste for alcohol and Aunt Sissy's habit of marrying serially without the formality of divorce--no one, least of all Francie, could say that the Nolans' life lacked drama. By turns overwhelming, heartbreaking, and uplifting, the Nolans' daily experiences are raw with honestly and tenderly threaded with family connectedness. Betty Smith has, in the pages of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, captured the joys of humble Williamsburg life--from "junk day" on Saturdays, when the children traded their weekly take for pennies, to the special excitement of holidays, bringing cause for celebration and revelry. Smith has created a work of literary art that brilliantly captures a unique time and place as well as deeply resonant moments of universal experience. Here is an American classic that "cuts right to the heart of life," hails the New York Times. "If you miss A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, you will deny yourself a rich experience."

  • Hard & happy times, sad times but always learning from life's lessons and from a love of reading.

The book depicts life in the slums just as they were when my parents were growing up, although it was a bit rougher than as she describes it. I grew up in Greenpoint which is mentioned in the book - it borders the area where most of the action takes place. The younger generation and even my generation don't realize my sisters and I slept in the same bed in a tiny bedroom with no windows, my parents slept on a pull out bed in the living room and we had a tiny kitchen that barely fit a table and chairs. The toilet was in the hall and we had no shower or bath - had to go to the public baths as did many of my friends who lived in a poor immigrant neighborhood in the 1950's. It was still a lot like the book though the book takes place at an earlier time. I think it would be a good book for the kids today who seem to want for nothing to see how hard life was in the USA then and I was a second generation American.

  • Now one of my favorite books.

This is a beautiful coming of age book based on the authors life. I couldn’t put it down. When my daughter is older I’ll ask her to read it as well. Three generations of my family have now read and loved this book. It’s life changing.

  • charming Literature

charming. An American Dickens, sorta. Poor kid is rich in experience. She had an appreciation of little things we take for granted living in times of plenty. And a strong sense of justice despite the cultural differences between early 20th Century and now.

  • Misprint

The book is great, although it is incredibly frustrating to read because every third page is printed out of order.
