Apparently this book was a big seller in the UK. Partly because of that, it was a little disappointing. It's the story of Stewart Gore-Browne, an upper middle class Harrovian who, too (comparatively) poor to make a big splash in England, discovered Northern Rhodesia after WWI and decided to make his mark there instead. He built a huge house out in the middle of nowhere, about 400 miles from the nearest town. I bought it partly because I'd seen his name mentioned in connection with Central African politics and the history of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. Unfortunately, although he was unusual in some ways (for example, in his lack of racial prejudice in comparison with almost all the other whites in C Africa) and did a lot to help the native cause, he wasn't that interesting a man -- or, if he was, the author fails to demonstrate it. Some interesting pictures.Read full review
