Arsenic and Old Lace is a classic comedy that has always been a favorite of mine. I teach high school writing and use this movie to teach both the literary analysis and plot summary. When students learn they will be watching a "black and white" movie, their first impression is often that they will be bored. Soon, however, they are drawn in to the plot and charmed by the sweet sincerity of the two old aunts with a mission to put lonely old men out of their misery. It is good to use for writing plot summaries because the movie has several interwoven subplots: Mortimer's marriage to Elaine, the aunts' "charity work," the scary brother Jonathan, and Teddy with his bugle charging up the stairs. For writing a literary analysis, students can focus on the use of irony, or other aspects of the story. I recommend this movie for teaching or for pure enjoyment. It is a classic that belongs on every movie shelf.Read full review

Arsenic and Old Lace is a comedy of the first order. It highlights the comedic talents of Cary Grant. The movie has an all star cast and is a wonderful insight to what happens behind the doors of a seemingly normal family. A delightful mix of murder, insanity and slapstick comedy. I love the twists and turns of the plot. I saw this movie as a child and participated in a high school production of it. I bought it so I would have this classic in my own collection. I highly recommend it.
