Sidney Lumet's directorial debut is a snapshot of the American judicial system in action. Twelve average New York males convene in a very small jury room on a very hot day in order to reach a verdict in a murder trial. Almost everyone wants to vote guilty and get on with their lives except for Juror No. 8 (Henry Fonda), a conscientious citizen who insists on establishing reasonable doubt. Arguments are made, cigarettes are smoked, murder weapons examined, diagrams drawn, and prejudices revealed. Firm opinions weaken and reverse; voices get raised, the clock ticks, and a ghetto kid's life hangs in the balance.Lumet's direction and camerawork steadily builds pressure into the plot. Things start out casual, but wind up so close and tight you can count the pores on the actors' noses. Fonda is good in a role well-suited to his extra-large sense of human dignity but the stealth giant in this actors dozen is the ferocious Lee J. Cobb. Jack Klugman, E.G. Marshall, Martin Balsam, Ed Begley, and Jack Warden play some of the other jurors, and a better assemblage of grizzled method actors shouting at each other won't likely come again. 12 ANGRY MEN was originally written for television, it is a true classic of the anti-McCarthy message era, and is not to be missed.

Made on a shoe-string budget, featuring an all-star cast, this classic film stands the true test of time. Appealing to those viewers interested in the moral approach to decisions, this film not only explores the different perspectives of attaining such decisions but is also entertaining in its presentation. Fast paced film, a stripped down minimal set, meaningful yet concisely clipped dialogue, excellent directing and supreme above-par acting by true greats, all contribute to the making of a film that you're unlikely to forget any time soon. An absolute gem!

To me, This film displayed the true American Democratic old style type of government unique to this nation. Taking 12 men of very different backgrounds and of very different characters and interlocking each emotion (which was very well done) covered the temperament of the likes of the common man on the street. It just takes one, with the courage of his/her convictions to stand out and hold which may indeed bring out true justice. In those days it seems there were more people who wanted the truth even if it meant more effort to seek it out. We watch this film on a fairly regular basis.

A Lesson In Perception
I bought the movie to use as a tool in college. It sets the stage for a clear contrasting of perceptions of people about a specific situation. This is a way to allow others to view conflict that is ultimately resolved thorugh thorough discussion and evaluation. I recommend this movie as a positive way to show people that dispite serious disagreements, ultimately, people can come together to reach a solution about an issue that is very important and leaves a long range result for the future citizens who come after them.

Super movie. Lee J. Cobb is supberb in his portrayal of Juror #3. A must to see. Henry Fonda is also wonderful. It keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what they decide. I hope that you will take the time to get a copy to watch.

Great example of how sticking up for what you know is right can save lives. Henry Fonda is a great actor and this is one of his best.
