Changes the way you talk to children
I bought this book for a Literacy class I was taking and had heard good things about it. After reading it, I also feel like everybody working with children in the field of education or any other should be required to read this book. There are many examples given of how much of an affect our language has on developing our students' social identities and in helping them grow as learners. Who knew the way you used the word 'good' might give students an idea other than what you intended. People always talk about 'be careful what you say', and I think with children we tend to not be as careful. After reading the first chapter and going to a school the next day, I found myself acutely aware of the language I was using when talking to and praising kids. Anyone who reads this book will not be able to ignore being casual with language that is used in the classroom, which makes it so good. This book is an eye-opener for anyone wanting to have a positive affect on children's learning and thinking and I would definitely recommend it for anyone going into the field of teaching.Read full review
