SynopsisA professor, university president, and one-term governor of New Jersey. Woodrow Wilson was elected president in 1912 and 1916. Wilson helped modernize the government, establishing an income tax, restraining unfair business practices, and establishing new standards for working conditions. In 1917, he led the U.S. into World War I. At the peace conference after the war, Wilson persuaded world leaders to form a League of Nations to preserve peace. On a tour to support the U.S. membership in the league, Wilson fell ill. The Senate refused to approve membership, and Wilson never fully recovered. Book jacket.
