Mickey Katz was a genius..his music was ethnic,to be sure,but it was fun.Katz was also a superior monologist,entertaining Katzkill audiences for decades..Don Byron interprets the Katz legacy as if he were a complete inter-planetary alien,totally unfamiliar with the language,the territory,and the heritage.Whereas Katz ,in writing and playing,always knew that his audience wanted to dance,sing,have a good time,Byron apparently thinks that a few minamalist touches of the original here and there are enough,and thus he devotes the bulk of this trainwreck to noise..Jazz noise,yes,but noise..If,say,a jewish artist were to take some traditional urban artform and make a mess out of it,an intentional mess,as Byron has done here,the result would be outrage..Yet Byron,in the name of who-knows-what,has taken this happy joyous music and denuded it of every identifying aspect,rendering up an album that,given it's premise,has to be one of the worst jazz albums ever recorded. Great CD highly recommended, Enjoyed the detail of the Music, I will listen to it mover and over again. I was inspired by the music, would highly recommended the CD. The wording is great and story line is super. Listen to it over and over again.
