I love this book. This is the second copy I've purchased. I gave my first copy to my daughter and then bought another because I still wanted to refer to it. I originally purchased this book because I wanted to learn how to train horses myself. Clinton is a master at thinking through the entire training process and condensing it down to the clearest, easiest to understand form. I've read articles and books even watched DVD's by other trainers and while they are all good, none has Clinton's ability to make it so simple and easy to understand. His humor and repetitive phrases make it fun and help to lock it into memory. All the basics are in this book. While Clinton's training DVD's give you more information and take your training to a higher level, the information given in this book is enough to teach you how to gain respect and control of your horse and break him to ride. This method has worked on every horse we own. I've trained four horses by this method so far - from a month old colt to an eight year old untrained stud horse. Within one to two days I see results. I've never outgrown the need for this book even though I now own a full set of his training DVD's from beginner to advanced, I still refer to it quite regularly as a quick refresher.Read full review
About a year ago I contracted horse training out for two high-strung fillies from our ranch. I'd heard good things about the trainer but was skeptical. Almost every trainer we had used in the past, fell far short of our needs and our expectations. These two fillies were buckers. One in particular was downright dangerous about it. The fillies came back solid and trust-worthy--now among the best in a string of 15. I'm sending two geldings next month. The methodology the trainer used? Clinton Anderson's Downunder Horsemanship. Wanting to stay consistent with their training, I purchased this and another Anderson book and breathed a giant sigh of relief. Finally! No-gimmick, no-foolin', common-sense horsemanship in a step-by-step process. I took the lessons from this book, converted them to a laminated training chart that hangs by the gate in the training pen. We check-off each lesson with each horse as we do it, with a rating by each horse to keep track of how he's doing. We don't skip a single step. As a result, the colts and fillies that go to the trainer now, are already thinking instead of reacting. Anderson obliterates the new-agey crap that has inundated and distracted the horse industry in recent years. While horse training at its highest level is certainly an art, Anderson reminds us that at its most fundamental it is a craft that requires diligence and plenty of practice. This book and its sequel, Lessons Well Learned, will save many a horse and will turn many pet owners into horsemen.Read full review
As a new horse owner, I am fascinated with Clinton Anderson training method. To purchase the first training set, Fundamentals, is VERY expensive and I hoped this book would help me decide whether to take a chance. This book gives more insight and detail into the Anderson training methods than his tv show. Two women work with Clinton through the Fundamentals. Most helpful to me was that the women were very different (one English with years of experience, the other Western and new to riding and this is her first horse) while both horses were very difficult! The women give their comments throughout the book, which was very enlighting. The result? I gotta have Fundamentals and I know I can do this!
I grew up on a livestock farm in Iowa and have a degree in Animal Science. Although I thought I knew a great deal about horses and have ridden many, I found that you can teach an old dog new tricks, meaning me, and not my horse. Anderson had been taught by some true horsemen and women and he makes an excellent teacher conveying the easy to learn concepts through demonstation with two eager to learn women and two not so eager to learn, problem horses. His methods truely work and will make your horsemanship more enjoyable. Thank you, Brian E
This trainer knows his stuff.....I got this book because no matter how good one is at something,we can grow better with others wisdom and experiences also. I had a horse with a problem I had not come across before, and I had several people made reference to Clintons Anderson methods, so I got the book and then got his DVD series fundamentals. He trains very much the way I learned, but he explained in detail the whys and the results for the why as well as several different ways to come at the same problem. That is something I would pay big money for the wisdom of how to solve a problem and what the result should be and why! Because Eisenstein theories of doing the same thing over and over and getting same result is madness is correct. I am wise enough to know we need to learn from others to be the best we can be!Read full review
Great book for anyone wanting to know more details about the techniques Clinton uses. Mostly ground training but these are the basics that every horse should know. Goes in to detail about how to accomplish the task, what are the most common handler and horse mistakes and how to correct them. Step by step it advances you through each task and by the time you’re asked to do more difficult tasks. You and your horse are ready to tackle them now that you have the basics, respect and good communication skills to get it done safely and successfully. Highly recommended for people with pushy horses that need these kind of techniques to teach there horse how to respect there space. Also, great for any horse owner that wants better communication and clear cues with there horse.
I have seen Clinton Anderson at clinics and on T.V. I have purchased his tapes and DVDs and have been using his techniques for several years. They work great. This book with the color pictures is written with great instructions. I have picked up a few more tips that I didn't catch onto with the other resources. Would recommend it to anyone interested in resistance free horse training.
