Did you ever experience an ennoying sort of buzzing in your ears? That was what hearing John Mayall was like after 30 years . Of course I don't deny that the guitar of Eric Clapton in those days wasn't a treat and some of those blues songs brought back memories. It was Mayalls voice that irritated me most and the inharmonic way the songs were sung . Give me Chicago blues anytime. These E nglish want to bes are no longer a substitute after youve heard the real thing.
...unrefined, daring- a great compilation. This is the stuff that got 'Miami' Steve Van Zandt off his parents couch and into the Freehold Hulabaloo. It's also the stuff that made the world rediscover J B Lenoir. I always liked Mayall for his unpretentious meanderings in Country & Electric blues and certain arcane jazz forms. On this CD are some his earliest efforts that reveal a heck of a lot (in hindsight)of the direction he was to pursue on later sessions and on the road. An enjoyable outset to the musical journey of one of the British Blues scenes ultimate originals. C. Frank Madjett, Deep South USA
