I first saw "My Bodyguard" in the movie theater in 1980 at the age of 17. I loved the main actors, Chris Makepeace (who had disappeared since he was in the 2004 "Meatballs" DVD interviews), Adam Baldwin (who was in the TV series "Chuck" a few years back & Matt Dillon, who still appears in films here & there. The movie involves a shrimp kid, Cliff (Makepeace) who is 14 & is going to public school for the first time. He runs into a gang of bullies (ran by Dillon) who are forcing the kids to pay protection money. Cliff ends up paying Linderman (Baldwin), who has a bad reputation, to be his bodyguard! The other cast members include, Martin Mull as Cliff's dad, Ruth Gordon as Cliff's drunken, sex hungry grandma & a very young Joan Cusack as Cliff's friend, Shelly. Paul Quant has a cute part as a friend of Cliff's and a pre-"Flashdance" Jennifer Beales has a small non speaking role. A great fun film that is actually great for the whole family. The surprise ending will make you cheer for the underdog! A Must for any DVD library!!!!Read full review
Young Dillon commands attention and recognition in this All American movie classic. It's a movie where he best defines his rebel acting attribute. In this movie he's the guy in school we all knew. Interestingly enough, he's the guy we wanted to be, wanted nothing to do with, and/or perhaps wished we never knew at all. When Dillon gets tough and bullies the new kid in school in this relatively tough blue collar town he soon finds out the smaller kid uses his wits to fight his battles. As Dillon trys to compensate to his new reality there is a struggle of power and the movie becomes somewhat "real life" action filled with a moderate amount of suspense and drama. The movie leaves you wanting more, thinking about better days or at least simpler times, times past and perhaps thinking about where we are today compared to yesteryear.Read full review
Adam Baldwin was introduced in this film. It was also great to see kids in school deal with the difficulties of social interaction without resorting to shooting or at least trying to kill the antagonist. The kids in this film settled their differences the way they used to, with friends, fists, and ingenuity. I Love the fact that when the parent got involved, what you would expect to happen did realistically. I really enjoyed this movie, my family did too. So I would recommend this title to a friend.

The movie is about a new kid in high school in a big city, (I think Chicago)and his friendships and rivalries. There is minor violence, as in fights between the kids and some profanity that is heard every day and teenagers probably have heard. Its an excellent story, with good acting by all. There are no special effects, just a good true to life movie. Parents can watch with teenagers and enjoy a good film. Teenagers will probably see a lot of themselves in it. I recommend it highly. I also recommend "A Little Romance" with Diane Lane and Sir Lawrence Olivier.
Great movie from 1980. I was 15 years old at the time and saw it in the movie theafer. I was going through a similar situation in my high school years in Baltimore with kids in my neighborhood. I was usually outnumbered by bullies.Great movie for anybody to watch.
