A memorable look at a decade that sums up all that is exciting about the American spirit. A lively, full-color celebration of an automotive era that began with 30s-fashion cars and ended with recognizably modern vehicles. Its also the story of how Americas automakers helped the Allies win World War II. Uses the proven picture-caption format, with over 1,400 photos of every major make of 1940s American car, plus classic independents, such as Hudson and Studebaker. Also includes period "lifestyle" photos, contemporary auto ads, and compelling war-production art. Shows how carmakers emerged from the Great Depression, turning out guns and fighting aircraft before basking in a postwar sellers market.

  • Excellent Reference!

Very good book detailing automobiles and manufacturing data for US and some foreign cars. Great pictures and good info, very useful in identifying cars and changes from year to year. Part of a series of books from the Auto Editors of Consumers Guide covering the 30s through the 70s.

  • Nice condensed quick reference

Chock full of photos, period ads, etc... although small (photos), it's just fine. Text is by the chumps, um, I mean auto editors at Consumer Guide and they regurgitate every negative stereotype about various cars from the 40's.... like the "pregnant elephant" term some(?) used to describe the '48 to '50 Packards, give it a rest. It was probably a single journalist that coined it, not the masses. Aside from these worn out "facts" and some other incorrect assessments by the genius' at Consumer Guide, it's well worth owning as a quick reference, and can be found used at $15 or less.

  • To me, a very splendid way to spend some hours.

The writing, organization, and photography - very well done! I especially like the interesting supplemental data such as color chip references for various years and models.
