Best Bang for the Buck in a Swiss Auto military style watch.

After a month or more researching pilot/dive watches I chose the Glycine Sub Combat. I'm happy I did. Was it everything I was looking for? No, but it was as close to perfect for me as I could fine at least without having to spend more than twice of what I paid. The guts of the watch (GL-224) automatic can be found in watches costing a $1000 or more. I searched Youtube and found only glowing reviews for this watch. For the money I don't think it can be beat for a watch of this type. My only knock on the watch is the minute hand is very narrow and while in daylight it reads fine it does become faint in low light if the lume is not charged. Adding a smaller dot similar to the hour hand would help.

    Beautiful but deeply flawed

Hello! Welcome to my watch review! I want to love this watch, I really do, but unfortunately I cant fully commit. I admit I made my own mistake, thinking for some reason it came with a bracelet and a strap and that's on me. 30 years of watch collecting and I'm getting woolly. Really, it came down to poor comfort, bezel and lume. The supplied strap is high quality but stiff and unyielding even when loose, and I hate loose. The bezel is 60 click and aluminum, on a $400 swiss watch. The lume is sadly lacking. For this brand at this price point I expected better lume at least. There were also issues with hacking, with the seconds hand failing to stop on several occasions. Yes, it is gorgeous, giving a sort of beautiful dash clock on a jaguar E type vibe. The overall finish is also good, almost delicate. So there is bad and good in almost equal measures. In the end I returned it, primarily because I can snag a seiko or even say, a zelos with better specs for less, and sapphire on the zelos for almost $200 less. Its brutally disappointing as I really wanted to like what I had considered a legend. That's the world of horology though, and if you can overlook these downsides it may be the watch for you. It might be worth the time to consider an airman perhaps. In all not totally bad, but not good enough for me to keep. I hope this helps, and thank you for reading this review.

  • Can’t believe the price!

This is a beautiful watch and i am a man so I don’t usually use the word beautiful much but thats all i can say when I look at this watch. I was expecting to get the glycine combat sub without drilled lugs because I wasn’t sure they made them like that anymore but i was even more surprised to see this one had drilled lugs. Im not sure about anyone else but it seems near impossible to find this much quality under $1000. You get a very reputable swiss automatic GL224 movement, sapphire crystal, 200 meter water resistance and a very respected swiss brand. Absolutely can not pass this up for $329!

  • good value diver

I have enjoyed my time wearing this watch over the past few weeks. The aftermarket Barton elite watch band is very comfortable, more than the original for sure. It does not have a very long power reserve listing at most I bet somewhere 24-36 hours. I absolutely love the color and the design as the black and orange contrast well. The 200m water resist is great and for a watch under $400, is difficult to beat. The lume is less than desired in normal light as it it shows weak brightness. Once in the daylight for a few hours, the lume is much better. Overall, very good diver for the price and as long as you are not a stickler on the details I mentioned before, it will serve you well in a short rotation.

  • Glycine GL0088 - Great watch!

This is an awesome watch. I have upper end watches and wanted a tool watch for daily wear. The Glycine GL0088 is well-constructed and really a cool sport watch. I would say it is comparable to the likes of Squale or lower end Tag Heuer. The only thing is the rubber band has a strong 'vanilla' type smell that is too much. I have used hand sanitizer on it but so far it is still there. If it does not go away, I am going to switch out the band.

  • Combat sub. - Affordable performance.

A great watch. Glycine enjoys a laudable and storied history. The combat sub. 42 is constructed with a solid case and a proven auto. movement. This timepiece will provide many years of service. The ability to make such a thin cased automatic watch gives the wearer a lower and in my opinion more comfortable profile. Glycine combines rugged durability with style.

  • Diver on a diet

IMHO modern watches in general have become too big and bulky and many dive watches are the worst offenders. Arnold can wear a giant AP or Panerai but not most of us. It’s a pain to stick your hand in your pocket and snag your watch or feel like you have a tuna fish can on your arm. So this Glycine Sub at about 11mm thick and 42mm wide is just the ticket. The bezel clicks smoothly and the crown screws down without fussing. 200 meters of water resistance is plenty unless you really SCUBA and then you’re going to wear a dive computer. Plus with a Swiss ETA 2824 powering it, this Glycine is also very nicely finished piece that feels like quality. Can’t beat it at any price.

  • Excellent diver!

This watch is robust and accurate - everything you’d want from an affordable diver. It’s a little rough around the edges: stiff bezel (with some play) and crown threads. However, as this is a tool watch, I love its functionality. Plus it’s looks unique and has an interesting militaristic heritage.

  • Glycine Combat Sub GL0088

Glycine Combat Sub GL0088 is even better than expected. Sits nicely on the wrist, must be one of the thinnest watches in its class. Very well made with lovely "lines". Just a quality watch at an amazing price compared to others on the market.

  • Fantastic

This is an excellent watch. Build quality is fantastic, and the movement is running like a top. I am seeing about -1 spd or better for the last couple of weeks (-8 over 2 weeks). The printing on the dial is really clean, and the lume is very good for a printed dial. It fits my 6.5-6.75” wrist like a glove. A friend of mine has a Combat Sub too, and it fits his 7.5” wrist just as well. Amazing design. I’ve put it on a mesh bracelet, and it looks great. Pick whatever color way you want and go for it - you can’t go wrong.
