Has It All: Breadth, Depth, New Insights, Mastery--LTJ
Johnson goes beyond his Anchor Bible commentary on the Letter of James with these essays on the book, its reception, interpretation and some specific issues that will make one re-think James. Wonderful balance between the general and the specific. He includes introduction, social world, theology, significance and survey as well as rigorous presentations on James and taciturnity (excellent) and James' use of Leviticus 19. (If you haven't been there, it will change your interpretation/understanding of James.) A first-rate thinker, Johnson plumbs depths way beyond what a commentary gives, and as a first-rate writer, he bears his arguments masterfully yet engagingly. Recommended for disciples who want an up-to-date start on studying James as well as for pastors and scholars who wish to dig deeply and discover new insights to enrich their walk with James' brother. No reader will be disappointed. Every reader will be reinvigorated in his/her faith. A gem in the study of James.Read full review
