Dr. Schwarzbein's plan will heal your body if only you will follow the plan and be diligent. I know that it works. My Aunt, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes was able to follow this plan. She did not have to take any insulin or medications to control her diabetes, just diet, as she was unable to even exercise as suggested. It's not just for diabetics, but anyone that takes medication for a variety of illnesses - high blood pressure, autoimmune disease, overweight and anything really. Even if you're healthy and not yet sick or overweight, by following the diet of the world you are probably heading in the direction of nutritional woes. The meals do not have to be cooked. There is great variety and liberty with the choices and preparation. They don't have to be complicated either. You can go gourmet or as simple and plain as you'd like. I would recommend her latest book over this one, called The Program. It has some revisions in her plan (20 gm carb meals instead of 15gm) and gluten free diet plans included in that and her reason for suggesting them. The diet has to be looked upon as "THE" medication for diabetes. Instead of the shots and pill, it is a healthy diet and exercise. The choice is yours. You can take the medicine in the form of insulin and oral pills and continue to get more ill, or take the proven lifestyle changes written about here as your medicine. It does take perseverance and diligence, as does anything worth while. By following this, you'll add life to your years and years to your life, as the saying goes. And anything worthwhile will take effort on your part. In the end you'll be a better person and healthy person for following this. There are similar plans out there, but hers is easy to read and understand. It has easy to comprehend lists throughout. I have bought her books many times and have to keep buying more because like the other reviewer, I keep giving them away to others desperate to get well.Read full review
I bought this book to send to a family member, who, for most of her 70+ years never ate a balanced meal and was suffering from severe mental depression. And here's why: My husband had previously bought a copy at a yard sale because it looked interesting and brought it home. Most of my life I have been what is known as a yo-yo dieter; I would lose 20 to 30 pounds only to regain it a few months or years down the road. I always thought I was eating the right foods for a healthy diet; low fat, no fat foods, lots of fruits, veggies and pasta, and very little red meat and eggs. I read The Schwarzbein Principle from cover to cover; actually, I couldn't put it down until I had finished it! Boy, were my eyes opened! According to Dr. Schwarzbein, everything I ever thought I knew to be right about dieting was totally wrong. And not only that, but because I have been eating all the wrong foods for so many years, I was actually at risk to develop a lot of diseases that I was trying to avoid such as cancer, heart disease, mental illness and diabetes just to name a few! Dr. Schwarzbein advocates eating lots of lean healthy meat, whole eggs (everyday), REAL butter, sour cream, cottage cheese, cream cheese, & olive oil just to name a few; She says to totally stay away from anything claiming to be low-fat or no-fat. In fact the reason it is so hard to lose weight and keep it off is because we do eat so many foods that are low fat and no fat. Also, eating too many carbs prevents us from losing the weight we so desperately want to lose and in reality makes us gain weight instead! High cholesterol isn't from eating too many eggs and red meat, but just the opposite; because we don't eat enough eggs and red meat. She says that we should eat no more than 15 - 20 grams of carbs at each meal. But also to keep each meal BALANCED. Eat something from every food group at every meal. Stay totally away from sugar, white flour and fried foods. That eating too many carbs, low fat and no fat foods for too many years is what causes heart disease, sugar diabetes, cancer, high cholesterol, depression and a host of others. And you know what? I started eating just the way she advised; to eat only whole, natural foods and avoid excess carbs, sugar, fried foods and such and I lost over 20 pounds almost overnight without counting a calorie or weighing a thing. It is unbelieveable! This is a book that everyone should read. If you follow this diet faithfully you can actually cure sugar diabetes, mental depression, heart disease and the like. You will drop to your natural healthy weight and will develop lean muscle mass. You will be healthier than you have ever been! Oh, by the way, the family member I was telling you about? She read the book and has since started eating healthy, natural and balanced meals and is on the road to recovery. She is feeling much, much better and is actually laughing again! I highly recommend this book to everyone!Read full review
I have been in search of a way to live a healthy lifestyle for some time now. I found a brief review of this book online, and I decided to give it a try. The information presented is very interesting. Some of it I'd heard before, but her presentation seems very complete. I'd classify the eating plan as low-carb. She tries to keep insulin levels in check, and after some period, all other hormones are supposed to reach optimal levels as a result. The book recommends not just an eating plan, but also stress management and other lifestyle changes. I was unable to follow the eating plan. The food is too difficult to prepare. Too many ingredients are needed for each of the mini-meals, and most of them need to be cooked. People who work and have a full schedule may not be able to whip up these meals in the middle of the day. Trying to make them all the night before would be difficult as well. If you have access to a kitchen all day and plenty of time, you may find it easier to follow the eating plan. Schwarzbein says that it may be many months before you can detect any improvements in your weight and health as a result of following her plan. That's a big leap of faith to ask of people. I can't help but feeling that there must be some other way, that would show results in less time. I don't want to sound down on this book; it just wasn't for me. I don't doubt that if followed, this plan would work. I will keep the book as a reference. I would say that, if you enjoy reading this type of book, and can get it at a good price, it might be worth purchasing even if you don't adopt the plan wholeheartedly.Read full review
I've read other books on protein and insulin but this book is really interesting and I'm finally "getting it". There's more clear info. here on how the body works and on how to avoid or heal insulin-resistance. I think I needed afew of the diagrams this book has as I learn better with visuals. And the personal stories here with the doctors comments are very interesting. It helped me see how just making some simple changes could change my life and my family's lives drastically for the better. Thank you!
Oh my gosh, this was one of the most informative books I have ever read. I would recommend it for anyone that is interested in taking great care of their body!
