I had this album as a tape many years ago. After several moves and much play the tape got tossed. Can't believe I lived without this music for a few years. I was looking at a site and there it was, cheap to, so I bought the cd and played it nonstop for a week to get my fill, the music is kinda rap but, in my opinion, so much better, like poetry put to music, it's loud, fun, sensitive, thoughtful, not a sing along but something that can be background music, excercise music and wake up the brain combination of songs. Wonderful and woefully underrated album.
This album is fabulous on so many levels. It is a portrait of the black experience in America, and it expresses the views of the philosophical African-American college student during the late 80s, early 90s. It is revolutionary without trying too hard, and definitely eloquent. There are countless references to rap, gospel, folk, country, rock, and pop here, and the lyrics are sheer poetry. "Tennessee" chronicles lead singer Speech's dream (or revelation)about his history, "Mr. Wendel" is a portrait of a homeless man in America, "Mama's Always on Stage" highlights respect for the young black single mom. The collective group didn't do much after this (word has it that the large ensemble couldn't stay afloat, as there were too many people to take a cut of the money). However, it is the reason for their downfall that the group was so great. The collective group sounds like a family and includes voices and instruments from all over the musical spectrum. Although some might perceive the lyrics as preachy at times, I don't. It's honest with the sort of heart-on-sleeve lyrics that give you an A-Ha! experience. Essential for those born during or after 1969, because it's a slice of life of our generation.Read full review
I love Arrested Development. From the time that they stepped on the scene in early 90's they stood out as a group of musicians unafraid to be different, and think outside the box creatively. I love their hits song PEOPLE EVERY DAY..OR EVERY DAY PEOPLE AS i ALWAYS CALL IT..MR WENDELL..AND EVERY OTHER SONG ON THIS CD..which actually makes you think and reflect on the state of the world. I have no complaints.I',m happy with my purchase..
Little dificult write in inglish but i try to make well. From first to last track this disc add fresh and cool music to a repetitive rap and hip hop scene, inteligent lyrics. Only a little detail, the song Everyday People i think that is a cover o remake form the song of same name from Sly and the Family Stone, but the credits say nothing... Out of these detail i wide recommend this disc. Regards to all
Love jamming out to Mr. Wendal on repeat on high blast in my Porsche
