This is a very thorough look at the genre of pulp fiction. The term pulp comes from the low grade of paper used to produce these novels. They date back from the beginning of the 20th century. They had their greatest popularity in the 1920's,30's, and 1940's.I am enthralled by the art of these books. The illustrations are quite graphic. Some of the art has been banned from the public, such as bondage or torture. It seems like most of the popular titles included a girl tied up or about to be ravaged, The sheer terror of this art caused what eventually brought about the comic book code. This code eliminated the violent and sexually explicit cover art in comics, pulps, and dime novels. This book takes the reader on a journey through the different styles of fiction. From the detectives to the westerns,to the countrys fascination with science fiction. These are all covered in depth in this anthology. The good versus evil is the overiding theme in these novels. The difference then was evil won out a great deal of the time.I enjoy this book, as it discusses the villains, as well as the heros, some heros which became very famous are The shadow, the Avenger, The Phantom, the Spider,Doc Savage, and Tarzan,to name a few, that have survived over a hudred years.I have a great fascination with the art and the art form. I am a romantic for the days of art over photography. The stories are extremely compelling, as well. I highly recommend this volume and others that remember the pulps, as the great American art form it was.Read full review
