If Mr. Flayhart could have written a better book, I'm sure he would have. He tells the story of the little shipping company from Philladelphia, Pennsylvania which started as an extension of the Pennsylvania Railroad and never turned a profit in it's existence. How it's owners and board of directors are using foreign flagged shipping lines to make a profit. The Red Star Line. The fall of the Innman Steamship Line. JP Morgan's IMM and finally the end of the line. If you enjoy reading about the lives of ships and businessmen behind them, then I recommend this book. It gave me a much better insight as to why the USA has never had a strong and lasting merchant marine after the conclusion of the Civil War.
