  • Tony Bennet and Dave Brubeck--A Rare Treat

This Tony Bennett gem found in the archives of Sony Records misplaced under a classical catalog from the same period (1962) titled "The White House Sessions, LIVE 1962, offers us a rare glance at two masters of their craft--Tony Bennett at his vocal height, and similarly Dave Brubeck with his Jazz unit in a rare encounter dated August 28, 1962 in Washington D.C. at the invitation of President Kennedy. It is truly remarkable that it took until late in 2012 to re-discover this vintage session. It makes one wonder how many other "lost sessions" are still to be discovered and transferred to digital format out in "Archeological Musical Land" from many now-forgotten jazz labels. The tireless work of Michael Cuscuna in the 1980's for Blue Note in searching its "vaults" and "unearthing" priceless material until then unreleased, reminds one that such endeavors must never cease to advance themselves in our search for other to-be-found musical treasures. As is often the case, "unplanned" sessions yield unexpected exposure and usual success. This piece of recorded history is certainly no exception. The arrangements are wonderfully-transferred to CD as the stereophonic sound is fresh, clear, and ageless in its scope. It is not surprising that the original recording was engineered by Teo Macero (of Miles Davis fame), a master in his own right in recording sound. Mark G. Wilder, Matt Cavaluzzo, Anthony Janek, Frank Bruno and Daqe Bennett, a well as Didier C. Deutch should be equally-congratulated in their eventual re-mastering and re-release of the material. Their efforts are exemplary. One clearly feels the "presence" of the session as if we were "there" with them suspended eternally in space. There is somewhat of a balance between the "Bennett" and the "Brubeck" tracks as presented here. Unfortunately, their combined contributions as a "working" band is rather brief--but still wonderfully-appetizing--enticing us for far more. We will probably never know what these two musical giants may have performed and produced if they had had the opportunity to record again--together. This definitely is a CD to add to any serious collection of Tony Bennett material. As mentioned earlier--it keeps us "hungering" for more--far more. As Jazz enthusiasts or popular listeners, we are brought into a bygone era when music was created in true artistry--aside from current "technical manipulations" which may temporarily satisfy--but never truly--ever fulfill.
