  • A Horse on the Merry-Go-Round........

Robert Montgomery directed this 1947 Film Noir, way before people knew what the term meant. The script, characters, location scenes and sets are well done and set a very good mood for someone visiting a small New Mexico town during a Fiesta. The film has strong elements such as the Merry Go Round, which would also be successfully used in an Alfred Hitchcock film, and many other elements that would be seen in later films in this category or genre called Film Noir. The feeling of an uneasy Post World War II America is well felt in this film, even with the Greyhound Bus in the opening scene. In many ways "Ride The Pink Horse" is very similar to other films to come within the next 10 years and may have been the initial influence. Robert Montgomery also (uncredited) directed major portions of John Ford's "They were Expendable" as Ford was ill, which is not always known. Robert Montgomery also set up the first movie office in Washington under President Dwight David Eisenhower to assist the government in making films in the 1950's. Also, the father of Elizabeth Montgomery of "Bewitched" fame. Robert Montgomery learned his lessons well, as one of his first films was in the early 1931 "talkie" "Inspiration" with Greta Garbo and also starred with Tallulah Bankhead in another early film. His "Robert Montgomery Presents" is one of the great shows from the early days of the Golden Age of Television. The Criterion Collection commentary is very well done, and worth the price of this new film restoration of "Ride The Pink Horse" which relates to the color of a horse on the prominent Merry-Go-Round, and that tells you nothing, as some may even watch this film and never catch the fact one of the horses is Pink unless they listen closely to the dialogue, as the movie is filmed naturally in Black and White.
