SynopsisChristmas Eve 1957: a young RAF pilot is heading home from Germany flying his single-seat Vampire jet fighter. As his mind drifts toward yuletide and home, he gradually realizes he is flying into a pilot's worst nightmare: his compass and radio stopped working, leaving him totally cut off from the world. A thick fog rolls in, erasing his view of the sea below, and his fuel supply is rapidly dwindling. Bailout into the icy waters is as sure a death as going down with the plane. How he lives to tell the tale makes for a gem of a story, one whose power and beauty are sure to enthrall readers across the seasons for generations to come. The Shepherd is at once a white-knuckle, grippingly realistic aviation thriller and a deeply moving testament to man's enduring spirit, courage, and hope told as only Frederick Forsyth could tell it. Reprint of the original edition of 1975.

  • Powerful Short Novella, A Story of Faith

Mr. Forsyth writes wonderfully compelling fiction that eases the reader into the world he's created so that fiction becomes a reality in the reader's mind. The story he tells, whether "Day of the Jackal" or "Dogs of War", eases the reader's mind into another reality so that the characters and the story become another reality. This is another example of his craft and, IMNSHO, the best of his fiction I've ever read. I'll call it a novella as it's too long for a short story but too short for a novel. It takes place on Christmas Eve, 1957, with a young RAF pilot in a DeHavilland Vampire single seat fighter flying home to England late in the evening. The Vampire suffers a complete electrical failure and the pilot seems doomed to dying in the North Sea. Then, he sees another aircraft of WWII vintage that he presumes is his "Shepherd", an aircraft sent up to guide him to safety. I won't say anything else as I don't wish to spoil the story for any other readers; I will say that it's extremely spiritual and that faith in an Almighty God is central. I bought my first copy of the book for $1 in a stack of clearance books many years ago and I found the tale so wonderful that I've bought about 8 other copies used, like this, as Christmas gifts to friends and family. It's best read aloud to your family on Christmas Eve but it's a great story to read on any day of the year. I have not been able to read this, either aloud to my family or simply by myself, without choking up and shedding a few tears at the deep spiritual message that Mr. Forsyth has conveyed. Great story and, again, this is Mr. Forsyth's best ever.
