Overlay, retrofit to manual wall switch; unreliable for Smart control; OK, with tweaking, as wall timer.
This is a retrofit solution to making a manual wall switch "smart"; it, however, fails in design both of its interface and physical clearances It fails in implementation due to a) use of short-range Bluetooth (vs WiFi, Zigbee, Z-wave), b) frequently "dropped" Bluetooth connection and c) dimensioning that hampers reliable actuation of the manual switch. It is powered by 2 AAA batteries that should last a few months. However, if you can get it discounted, it is a workable solution to covert a manual switch to a 24 hours time switch. 1. After repeated attempts to connect, and even more to update the firmware, you can program a night-time schedule on a daily, weekly or other basis; the programming resides in the unit and does not need Bluetooth connection to the app. 2. For the rocker switch, the clearance has to be to the nearest mm for effective actuation of the rocker switch. By trial and error, I taped a 2 mm thick spacer on the rocker so that the unit would be in sufficient contact with manual switch surface. 3. While the unit sticks to the wall switches' two plate screws, some cases, especially if the rocker is stiff, may mean changing to a softer rocker and/or gluing or taping the unit to the wall place to prevent separation. With newer complete WiFi smart wall switches now approaching $15-25 each, this Switchmate is really only viable if it is priced at $10; it is unreliable as a smartswitch but OK as a retrofit timer switch - with a lot of tweakiing.Verified purchase: YesCondition: Pre-owned

Does not work with Google assistant properly. Can't just say hey Google turnoff the light . You have to say ok Google.... Swtichnate.... Ok switchmate turnoff light takes way too long. The app kills battery on phone requires location on 100% and used up 25% of my battery for only being installed for 6 hours. Not a good application. Now let's see the switchmate would disconnect from wifi and then use the app to get it to reconnect rendering Google assistant useless anyway. Great idea; too bad its not reliable.
I bought one of these to just to see how well they work. This unit is held against the switch plate with two strong magnets at the mounting plate screws. There is a motorized actuator that travels up and down to actuate the switch. The problem is that after the actuator moved the switch did not fully move enough to toggle or Switchmate was pushed away from switch. I tried 3 different wall switches and only one worked reliably. The problem may be that my wall switches need to b aligned or shimmed to work properly. But who is going to do that?Verified purchase: YesCondition: New
