  • Great tone, great playability, good price

I write with the caveat that I'm a guitar player still learning to play bass. The first thing I noticed is that the edges of the frets are sharp - not really an issue for me, but maybe for others. The other thing I noticed is that for the first few days of playing it turned my fingers black. And the thick part of the neck near the body appears to be a second piece of wood glued to the first. I also had to figure out that I needed a 9 volt battery for the electronics; there are no instructions, and I initially mistook the battery holder for an AA holder. Aside from tuning, I did not do any setup work; at the 12th fret, the E string is nearly 1/4" from the fretboard. Even with the action so high, it plays very well, and I was able to play Tom Sawyer the first day I tried. Bends and slides are relatively easy. None of the 21 frets buzzed on mine, although the action is set pretty high. Acoustically, the tone is very bright with a solid low end. Amplified, it has a full sound, also very bright, but able to be toned down a bit with the eq. The electronics and eq work well, and I appreciate the fact that the battery can be changed without removing the strings. Visually, I haven't noticed any imperfections in the finish, but the finish is very thick, giving it a glassy look. Overall, the fit and finish issues are minor, and the playability and tone are much better than I expected of an instrument at this price. In fact, it plays so well and sounds so good I wonder if I didn't miss my calling as a bass player.

  • Great value

I was deciding between this and a used Dean acoustic bass of the same style, but with the price difference between the two being $60 it was a clear choice. It came in a little less packaging than I would have liked but shipping was free and very fast. I needed to trim the bridge by about half because the action was way too high for my liking, but it was very easy to do so. The active equalizer offers a good amount of adjustment to avoid getting much feedback from an amp, and even comes with a battery which was thoughtful. The design is simple but nice, although i do have a small blotch of darker finish on the face of the body which is obviously of a lighter material but I can live with it for the price. It is surprisingly light. After the action was lowered, it was much more playable and i found that it has a good tone, and that i cannot detect major fret buzz. Speaking of frets, a concern with cheap instruments is that the frets tear your hand up as you slide down the neck but they're very smooth and even. Up to par with my Ibanez even. The tuners hold well after string break in, and they don't appear very cheap. Overall i don't regret my purchase at all. Oh and the best part? It has GREAT acoustics unplugged. I'm impressed with that part.

  • Decent 30” scale base for a good price.

I wasn’t expecting much at this price, but was pleasantly surprised by the fit and finish of the instrument. Understand that it will require setup to make it playable, but there’s enough info online that anyone can do it. Tighten the truss rod, trim the saddle and it becomes a very playable bass, though the intonation is horrendous above the 14th fret. The strings appear to be regular nickel electric bass strings, so you may want to get some acoustic strings (Fender 7060s should fit and they’re pretty cheap). The fret board and tailpiece on mine were very dry when it arrived, so you may want to hit those with some mineral oil. At this price, it probably deserves 5 stars, but because it does require a little more setup work I took 1 away. For those having issues with response from the low strings through the pickup; One thing I noticed is after trimming the saddle, the edge of the tailpiece directly behind the saddle has a sharp edge that the E and A strings rest on and keeps them from fully resting on the saddle. Taking this edge off helps even out the response and makes it easier to get strings through. Also, make sure your saddle is completely flat on the bottom. Piezo pickups can be finicky and if the contact with the saddle isn’t even the response won’t be either. For those with the skills and ambition you may consider shaving about 1/8” off of the bridge where the saddle pocket is to allow a little lower action and better contact between the saddle and transducer. Also slotting the saddle (the strings will move slightly with the flat saddle) will make it a little more stable. I’m also thinking of pulling the frets from 15 up as they appear to have abandoned the scale at this point and fretless I could at least play in tune notes.

  • Good bass for the price

I heard the action was high, and its true. still could use some more lowering than I did, realistically, but I didn't want to mess it up overdoing it (I'm no guitar tech, haha). Even with this, it would be a 5 star rating if they sent what I ordered, but I got the blue one instead (really don't care that much, kept it, just an odd mistake, especially when box said pink, haha). Its been years since I played and I just wanted something to play around on in the living room to catch up and pass time...its perfect for that! Haven't even plugged it in yet..don't own an amp. This thing is great for me, especially at 80 bucks!

  • Suprisingly good bass

This is a surprisingly good bass. Mine came with a nice binding and decorative ring around the sound hole. I play with my fingers so I didn't glue on the pick guard. It seemed really cheap. For this kind of money you can't beat it. The electronics work fine. The strings it comes with are cheap and not very good. I changed them and the tone was really full. The tone with or without amplification is deep and louder than expected. Here's a few things to note: I would suggest planning on taking it in for a set up by a Luther at a guitar shop. I repair guitars and the action out of the box was HORRIBLE. The strings were way too high. I had to lower the bridge about half way from where it was to get the proper string height. Also has to file down the holes at the nut to bring the height down. Don't try this yourself. I have been trained. All that said, you should have your instrument set up by a professional anyway. This is worth the money.

  • Setup

As other reviews have noted the bass needs setup, so expect to either pay for that, or do it yourself. If the latter, There is little to no info on setting up and acoustic bass on-line that I could find. But my thought is that it should be about twice that of an electric, so the initial goal should be for the height at the 12th fret to be about .11 inch for the E string (about 2 quarters), and about half that for the G string (the others will automatically fall between). The height at the nut was slightly high, but OK, and not worth the risk of getting it too low if you don't know what you are doing. On-line videos and discussions of doing this sort of setup for an acoustic guitar will help, except for the measurements.

  • Big thump for the buck!

This bass came out of the box needing a few minor adjustments to the high action but for less than $100 it was way better than I expected. I haven't tried the electronics yet since I mainly wanted it for acoustic use. Decent acoustic tone and volume for small group gatherings. My student wants to keep it so I might have to buy another for myself!

  • A work in progress!

Great guitar for the price. I have to replace the strings, but plugged in sounds great. Turned neck to max to bring action down. Still had to file down the bridge some to lower action. Can't wait to hear it with new strings. I did not put the pick guard on, it looks much better without it.

  • A very good value

This bass is a fantastic value the quality is great. The strings it comes with are not great and they are miles high above the fret board but with a $13 dollar set of strings and a bit of sanding that can easy be fixed. The eclectic pickup stem works well although i have not had a chance to try it on a bass specific amp yet. The only downside of this bass is how sketchy the packaging is. The guitar comes in the original box with a random little box taped on the front with one side open within the guitars original box there is hardly any foam just a tiny sheet rapped around the bass guitar once. the box came with one end crushed and i still amazed the guitar didn't come smashed to toothpicks. as long a yours shows up in one peace i would highly suggest it to any guitar or bass player wanting a amp-less practice instrument.

  • Good product for the price

I play an upright bass most of the time and it gets a bit cumbersome to get from practice to practice. I saw this bass and thought for the money I would give it a try and so far haven't been disappointed. It's great to throw in the back of my car and it not take up so much space to go to practice and am even considering playing it on stage.. the only downside is that the action is a bit higher than I like but that's a simple fix. Good product for the price..
