Reviews--Washington, DC Post, January 1997 Peter Milton's etchings and engravings tingle with motion, fluidity, ectoplasm and arrested flight. Certain sections of some works seem to have aged while others stayed young; portions of other works seem to be partially developed, like photographs erratically dipped in solution. This playfulness is well represented in two facing plates, "Interiors V: Water Music" and "Interiors VI: Soundings." Milton makes a visual pun on the title of Handel's famous composition: While formally dressed musicians carry on in a museum-like room, women in bathing suits float by in the water that has unaccountably half-filled the building, while high up on the wall a great, shadow-throwing whale seems to be bursting in. Meanwhile, on the opposite page, water has filled an enormous open room of some public building. While muscians provide dance music, a Colette look-alike sits over tea at a table, and in the foreground the artist himself fools around with some pencils. Behind him a bicycle is taking leave of its wheels even as its rider seems to be spawning a ghostly doppelganger -- and all of this is trumped by the fish swimming high and low at the front of the scene. These are prints with which to practice dreaming while awake.

SynopsisPeter Milton is one of America's most intriguing artists. His black-and-white figurative etchings and engravings are at once surreal, erotic, and technically complex. This fascinating volume showcases all of Milton's etchings to date, from 1960 to the present, including two extensive series that illustrate the Henry James masterworks The Jolly Corner and The Aspern Papers. The etchings, many of which are accompanied by details enlarged to actual size, are illuminated by an in-depth introduction by curator Robert Flynn Johnson. Providing added insight into Milton's career and techniques are a fascinating interview between Johnson and Milton and Milton's essay about his famous Daylilies and Nijinsky Variations series and the inspirations behind them. A biography and bibliography complete this rich portfolio.
