I first discovered this band through their 5th album V and was really impressed with it so I also discovered this, one of their earlier albums and think it's just as good if not better than V. If you like early 90s shoe gazing bands eg My Bloody Valentine and Swervedriver, alterative rockers The Fall and early Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd you should like this album. All the 7 tracks here take in those influences, Black Smoke Rise and Crossing cruise along brilliantly with the fuzzy base and guitar haze throughout with touches of psychedelic keyboards here and there. The same is true of Home and Flight, perhaps the keyboards more prominent on the latter. Where they experiment more - Lazy Bones is funkier and faster paced, Looking Out is a Fall-esque alterative rocker. Finally the album closes with Rising, an excellent slow paced atmospheric psychedelic rocker complete with backwards percussion which finishes the album brilliantly. This is a classic from yet another underrated band and really needs to be heard.Read full review
