Being a former musician, I appreciate the very professional manner these musicians compliment one another. The arrangements are remarkable given the limitations their technology at the time posed. I have heard the pop music that later incarnations of this band played (who hasn't?). There is a real jazz influence to be found here in Foxtrot. A real spirit of questioning in the lyrics (which are both powerful and at times bizarre). Spend your money on this album, get Selling England, Nursery Cryme and The Lamb (also the Live album). Forget all the rest unless you just like corny music that reminds you of the past.
This was the first Genesis album I ever bought. I fell in love with it immediately . This is a good choice if you're trying to get into the Peter Gabriel era of Genesis, when they still made progressive rock. I wasn't too thrilled with the opener, "Watcher of the Skies." It sounds very futuristic and Gabriel's vocals are amazing, but the song is much too repetitive for my taste. Also, it contains about a minute and a half mellotron intro, which it is cool, but it seems to go on for an eternity. Track two, "Time Table" could've been a single, if people were more open-minded. It's one of their shorter songs, only 4:47 and reminds you of days of old, when Kings and knights still roamed the land. Very pretty song, some wonderful wordplay in the lyrics as well. Listen to Micheal Rutherford's bass playing in this song. "Get 'em Out By Friday," is a song about some tenants being evicted from their apartment due to a large corporation buying up all the land. It's an interesting song with lots of roll playing by Peter. This song is Genesis, has all the elements. Many tempo and time signature changes, abstract lyrics, beautiful melodies, virtuoso playing by all of the members. "Can-Utility and the Coastlines," even though I don't understand the title, is an incredible song. Very similar in style to Time Table, it could've been the A-side. Very English, beautiful acoustic guitar work, wonderfully lilting keyboards, and the vocals are soaring. Really cool jam after the first chorus with Tony Banks' mellotron playing over it. This song is brilliant, just listen. After that we have Steve Hackett's "Horizons," a nice solo acoustic guitar piece. And of course, then we have the album highlight, the epic "Supper's Ready." This song is a 23 minute progressive rock epic. It grabs you instantly, no fiddle-farting around. Peter is at his best here. With very beautiful yet very complex guitar underneath (I know I tried learning it, didn't work out very well). This song takes you everywhere and if I tried to review the hole thing here I'd take up the rest of the page. So let me just say, when you have time, turn down the lights, put on your headphones, close your eyes and let it take you away. By the conclusion I'm crying every time. You've gotta listen, it's a right of passage for anyone that's interested in psychedelic/prog rock. This is one of their best albums. I consider this "Selling England By the Pound"s sister album. A highlight in the progressive rock movement of the 70s, a time when music was still filled with integrity. Where there were no boundaries. Hopefully, someday we'll return to that state-of-mind in all the arts again someday.Read full review
This cd sounds great ,takes me back to a simplar time even though the music on this cd is anything but simple. This cd is one of my favorite genesis cds which also includes original singer Peter Gabriel with Phil Collins on drums and backing vocals. Just a great cd.

This album shows the original Genesis at their peak. The imagery of the the lyrics is strange and amazing with musical performances that are original, complex, challenging and truly beautiful. I have listened to this album for years, but both my vinyls and my MP3 download always had problems on Supper's Waiting (Conspiracy???). This album is flawless and even includes lyrics to these gems. Now I can get shivers listening to Supper's Ready without also having to cringe when the recording skips (Vinyl) or includes odd snippets of other tunes embedded into it (Thanks to MP3). Finally, I can bliss out and follow the lyrics at th same time. I've reached Nirvana!
I have been a Genesis fan for a long time... Just now getting into older Peter Gabriel Genesis.

This was back in the day when Genesis was a progressive rock giant. Peter Gabriel was the frontman of the group and was backed by Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, Steve Hackett and Tony Banks. There are six tracks on the CD with the opus Supper's Ready (22:58) which is my personal favorite. Along with The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, Foxtrot is a high point in the Gabriel-Genesis association. I have favorites from Nursery Cryme and Selling England By The Pound, but Foxtrot was the album that got me interested in the band after Lamb. A phenomenal album!!!
Fantastic sounding cd
