This collection reproduces Dore's plates of many scenes from Dante's Divine Comedy. They are good artistic efforts in the first place, and this particular collection does a good job in the reprinting. The originals were also black and white--that is not a reduction to reduce production costs. This collection has all of the plates. The images are good teaching tools, if you are covering all or part of the Divine Comedy with a class, but this book is also a good gift for someone who enjoys Dore's art, the Divine Comedy, or both. I was first exposed to some of the images in a class on Dante, and I recently purchased this book as a gift for my sister-in-law who has studied Italian and Dante. The captions on the pictures are, however, in English translation, so no knowledge of the Italian language is required to enjoy these images! I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Dante, The Divine Comedy, Dore's work, or simply in looking at striking black and white images. Dore's mastery of rendering the human body accurately gives power to his interpretations of Dante's descriptions, particularly in the Inferno section, but also in the Purgatorio and Paradiso images.Read full review
