I have little interest in Tarot per se, but I'm quite interested in the Italian Renaissance. If you believe that the Tarot has its origin in the secret knowledge of ancient Egypt, you have been misled by imaginative 18th century romantics. The Visconti-Sforza Tarocchi cards are the oldest "Tarot" cards in existence, but they were never actually intended for divination purposes. Their purpose was primarily as allegorical emblems (a very popular theme in those days), and as expensive hand-painted high art they were a way for wealthy families to show off their taste for exquisite things. If they were "used" at all, it was for ordinary card games. It was only in the 18th century that occultists began to ascribe imaginary origins and esoteric doctrines to them. But they are important artifacts of Renaissance high culture, and if you can appreciate and enjoy them for that (as I do), then this offering from this vendor is a great value. Read full review
